Reflecting on a Decade of Change
Reflecting on a Decade of Change:
Observations about Chinese Undergraduates Studying in America (2006-2015)
The Council for American Culture and Education (CACE), in collaboration with the Research Institute at Dipont Education Management Group, has recently embarked on a research project which aims to trace, record and study the academic and cultural experience of Chinese students educated in the States.
The numbers of these students has grown rapidly since 2006, when American colleges opened their doors to Chinese students. In the 2013-14 academic year, the number of Chinese students enrolled in American undergraduate programs was 110,550, an 17.9% increase from the previous year, and 11 times the number of students enrolled in2006. U.S. Colleges have become the prime choice for Chinese students who are looking for a foreign education and meanwhile, Chinese students have become the largest community of international students.
This global phenomenon merits a closer inspection of its causes and implications. Relevant questions include how the growing number of Chinese students affects college admission and campus life and how Chinese students adapt to the academic and social settings of American universities.
The Council for American Culture and Education (CACE), with the support of the Research Institute at Dipont Education Management Group has thus designed a project intending to capture the experiences of education professionals and Chinese students both in Chinese high schools and U.S. Colleges. Their stories and opinions will be gathered through surveys and interviews. The data will be used purely for academic study and results will be published/released with the permission of interviewees by the end of 2015.
The information collected will be presented in several formats by The Council for American Culture and Education and The Research Institute at Dipont Education Management Group, they are as follows:
● A formal report titled “White Paper”: Reflecting on A Decade of Change: Observation on Chinese Undergraduates Studying in U.S. Colleges(2006-2015)
● Stories/Opinions (in print and digital version) published in WE-World Education, the first non-profit bi-lingual educational magazine targeting Chinese high school students, co-founded by CACE and Dipont in 2011
● A series of documentaries on U.S. colleges, Chinese students overseas and international education topics.
